INDOOR NAVIGATION    
Based on RFID tags and Wi-Fi access points    

Thanks to the use of two popular and low cost technologies (Wi-Fi and RFID) it is possible to obtain an indoor localization system which is as versatile as the GPS based outdoor systems.

 

 

HOW IT WORKS:

Several (low cost, passive) RFID tags are deployed in a building and their position is stored in a central database.

One or more Wi-Fi access points transmits unencrypted information on the RFID tags position.

Any device capable of receiving a Wi-Fi signal obtains this information as soon as it enters the range of the Wi-Fi access points and then uses it to elaborate a map of the surrounding environment.

If the device detects one or more RFID tags in the area, it is then able to calculate and indicate its own position on the map displayed on the screen.

FURTHER TECHNICAL DETAILS:

  • RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags are small adhesive labels that can be easily stuck onto walls, doors, windows, furniture, etc. Their position is stored in a simple database containing information like: Id, latitude, longitude, height, type of object, etc.
  • One or more Wi-Fi access points broadcasts unencrypted information on the RFID tags position inside their beacon. For each tag described only a few tens of bytes are required (around 100 tags data per second can be broadcasted without affecting the normal Wi-Fi traffic speed).
  • Any device capable of receiving a Wi-Fi signal automatically receives the beacon frames transmitted by the access-points of the area, without connecting or authenticating or even sending any response signal (thus with a consequent energy and battery saving).
  • Any Wi-Fi device receives information on the position and type of object associated to the RFID tags of the area (e.g. corridors, doors, windows, etc); with a simple elaboration, such information is used to represent in a graphical manner an approximation of the plan of the surroundings.
  • If the receiving device equipped with a RFID reader detects in the area one or more RFID tags (which coordinates are known) it is then able to calculate its own position by means of a simple triangulation. Such position is then indicated on the map displayed on the screen.
